However, what The House by the Edge of the Lake misses in narrative coherence it more than makes up for with an atmospheric location, a handful of off-kilter scenes, and a fair amount of sex. Set in a mythic New York City and spanning more than a century, it is a story of miracles, crossed destinies and the age-old battle between good and evil. Colin Farrell plays a turn-of-the-century Irish thief who encounters a terminally ill heiress while robbing her house.

The book, "The House by the Lake: One House, Five Families", is a nuanced look as much at the politics of the times as of the families who had lived in the house. Harding's own family had built the house on a lake side area in the southwest section of Berlin, near Potsdam, in the 1920's.
